IH-94 OUTSTANDING ASPHALT PAVING PROJECT NOMINEE FOR 2011
The spring of 2011 saw Stark undertake what was, at the time, the single largest asphalt paving contract in WisDOT history. Approximately 13 miles of Interstate 94 were to be repaved over the course of the summer on one of the busiest stretches of highway in the state. Stark got right to work, operating three asphalt plants day and night, and partnering with Curran Contracting to make sure the asphalt placed with as little disruption to the traveling public as possible. Throughout the course of the job, the schedule was actually compressed to the point where all 245,000 tons of asphalt was put down and the paving completed just prior to the start of Summerfest, a full six weeks ahead of schedule. The result was a new smooth-riding pavement and recognition as WisDOT’s Southeast Region nominee for Outstanding Asphalt Paving project for 2011.
124th Street Daily Reporter Top Project Award
The stretch of 124th Street from Cold Spring Rd. to Grange Ave. was in dire need of rehabilitation, and Stark was awarded the project to begin work in April of 2012. While not dealing with heavy traffic on a daily basis, the most challenging aspect of the job was coordinating with the three municipalities that had jurisdiction over the length of the job. In conjunction with R.A. Smith National, the roadway was significantly improved and completed not only to the standards of the three local municipalities, but also to the WisDOT specifications under which the job was administered. It was this coordination between engineer, contractor, and agencies that garnered the project staff Daily Reporter Top Project recognition for 2012.
7th Street Concrete Pavement – Racine
The existing five-legged intersection just outside of City Hall in Downtown Racine was due for traffic capacity and safety enhancements, but it was also an opportunity to improve the character of the vital city center. Stark Pavement Corp. was selected as the prime contractor on the project, which consisted of not only a brand new roundabout to safely move traffic through the intersection, but also a landscaped plaza commemorating the famed Red Arrow Brigade (32nd Infantry Division). The final product turned out to be a prime example of how transportation infrastructure impacts not only the driving public, but can help act as a gateway to help bring a community back together.
